How You Can Start Up Your Own Roofing Business

By Adriana Noton

When it comes to starting up a business, there are a lot of different things that you need to do to get started and it's no different if you are considering starting a roofing business on your own. It's a great way in which to showcase your skills as well as a way for you to gain financial independence. Even though you might think it could be a business that is only seasonal, this couldn't be further from the truth. Depending upon what kinds of services you offer, you could have yourself with enough business to keep you busy all year.

One of the most important things you are going to need to do before you get started is to make sure that you get yourself enough insurance. You need insurance to cover your business in case employees do damage or get hurt and to also protect you against any customer issues or accidents as well. It's the best way in which to protect you and your roofing business.

You will need to make sure that you cover everything that you have listed as equipment to get your business started and this should include very important safety equipment. Some items you need to consider purchasing should be retractable cables and lanyards, roof anchors, hard hats, guardrails, lots of ear plugs, allergy masks, different first aid kits, protection for your eyes, different harnesses and overalls.

You expense list will also need to include different hand tools as well. Some important ones should include hammers, cutters for shingles and slate, hatchets, pry bars, scissors, squeegees, caulking and caulking guns and trowels. You also might want to include hoist wheels and hoists, gravel buckets, different sized ladders, nails, measuring tapes, tools for marking, mops and brooms for clean up.

You will more than likely need something to haul all of your supplies and equipment in if you don't already have something like a truck and/or a trailer and you will need to make sure they are equipped with cargo straps in order to secure down your equipment so that nothing gets damaged in transport.

You more than likely are not going to be able to do roofing by yourself so you will need to consider hiring at least one other person to help you get the business going. This person should be highly skilled and licensed. You can hire those with little experience and who are looking to learn after your business a lot more experienced and established.

After you have all that you need to start up your business you are going to need to sit down and decide upon what kind of services you will be offering and just how much you are going to charge for the different services. After you have that figured out you should decide what kind of payment you will accept. When you first start up, you might want to just stick with checks or cash and then later on down the road open yourself up to accepting credit cards.

Once all of this is done you will need to get your business license any sales tax permits you might need, a federal tax ID number and any permits that you might need. You can find out if you need permits by getting in touch with your local construction authorities.
